A diverting origin story for the characters from *‘Monsters, Inc.’*. While it doesn’t quite reach the heights of its predecessor, *'Monsters University'* remains an enjoyable movie. It goes back in time to show Mike and Sully before their work at Monsters, Inc., and largely succeeds; there isn't as much emotional depth, but the humor is still very good. John Goodman (as Sully) and Billy Crystal (as Mike) are excellent once again, and Helen Mirren joins the cast as Hardscrabble, delivering a nice performance. I wasn’t overly impressed with some of the other new characters, though they do have their roles to play. The story is engaging; it loses a bit of momentum when the competition starts, but everything remains pleasant—the 104-minute length goes by quickly. I would have liked to see a continuation of the story with an older Boo, although I’m not certain what that might look like, but this feels like a worthwhile addition to the original film from 2001.
