Monsters University is genuinely good; it's easily the strongest offering from Pixar in recent years. It's a pleasant experience, benefits from solid voice acting, and has an appealing charm without becoming overly sentimental. However, this also marks their third stumble in a row. Like Brave did, and unlike Cars 2, Monsters University possesses considerable value and is definitely worth seeing. When Pixar debuted with Toy Story back in 1995, there was an expectation that they’d maintain that level of quality. And they did! That continued until 2006 when Cars arrived—the first film from them that didn't completely captivate audiences worldwide. Since then, Pixar has fluctuated in terms of public approval, and Monsters University finds itself somewhere comfortably in the middle ground. It’s a good movie, particularly considering it's aimed at children and functions as a prequel, but it isn't the return to their peak that viewers have been anticipating. The film doesn’t take any chances; it settles into the fairly conventional “College Comedy” genre, which is another safe choice. It may not reach the heights of the original, but it’s also not entirely unsatisfactory. The movie functions as most films with a substantial budget do: it occupies your attention for ninety minutes, fulfills its purpose within the entertainment industry by providing amusement, and then departs, leaving you smiling, though perhaps not completely fulfilled. It avoids risks whenever possible and shies away from anything novel, seemingly out of concern for upsetting viewers or failing to recoup their investment. It’s acceptable; audiences have come to expect this sort of thing. It's an enjoyable experience that comes to a close quickly. It's worth the cost and time commitment, but it doesn't live up to what people have grown accustomed to from Pixar's earlier years. 74% -Gimly
