Mike (played by Hugh Jackman, nicknamed "Huge") scrapes by performing Neil Diamond covers in Milwaukee when he encounters Claire (Kate Hudson). Both are struggling – she's supporting her family, and he’s battling alcoholism – and generally feeling uninspired until a team-based tribute act comes to mind. Considering the breadth of Diamond’s work, including songs like “Sweet Caroline,” it seemed hard to go wrong. However, their debut as "Lightning and Thunder" before a group of bikers leads not to applause but to a fight, and they find themselves calling themselves something else entirely ("Soolaimon," which is confusing, even to me). After regrouping and aiming for a more welcoming crowd, things begin to look up, culminating in an opening slot for “Pearl Jam.” Then, while gardening, Claire suffers an accident that leaves her hospitalized and deeply discouraged. With Mike also struggling with his health and Claire now mostly inactive, relying on painkillers, the story asks whether they can recover and continue their journey, or if it’s all destined to fail. Jackman is adequate in his role, but Hudson truly shines with a warm and engaging performance – both during performances and while dealing with her recovery. Both actors sing themselves, and thankfully, Jackman avoids trying to impersonate Diamond as he delivers the familiar songs; Hudson provides gentle keyboard accompaniment and vocals, also getting audiences moving with some country numbers. It’s definitely not a biographical film about Neil Diamond, but rather a story of two people who found love, experienced setbacks, and tried to keep going, finding enjoyment and providing entertainment along the way. Apparently, “Cracklin’ Rosie” was inspired by wine.
