You and this child face the risk of endless suffering! Jon Amiel directed Sommersby, which is based on the historical account of Martin Guerre, a 16th Century French peasant. A previous film adaptation, The Return of Martin Guerre, was released in 1982. Richard Gere, Jodie Foster, and Bill Pullman are featured in the cast. Danny Elfman composed the music, and Philippe Rousselot handled the cinematography. Essentially, the movie tells the story of a man (Jack Sommersby) who went off to war and was thought to be dead by his wife (Laurel) and the community where he lived. After about nine years, he reappears, back in his marriage bed and regarded as a hero by the village. Doubts begin to surface, however, suggesting that this man might not actually be who he says he is. It sounds strange, certainly, but it’s a true story, and a captivating one at that. This American version boasts high-quality production values, skillfully driven forward by Gere and Foster in the leading roles of Jack and Laurel Sommersby. Director Amiel appropriately uses a gradual unfolding of events, demonstrating an understanding of how to tell a good story. This immerses the viewer in the post–Civil War setting and allows us to become acquainted with the main characters and their environment. At its heart, the narrative is a touching love story, constantly challenged by a mystery that needs to be resolved or dismissed. There are also significant economic problems present, and the lingering presence of racism remains palpable. A great deal happens in Sommersby, but it never feels bogged down because of it. It’s also pleasing that, despite some negative reviews from critics, the ending is powerful and avoids typical Hollywood conventions. It isn't perfect; a degree of acceptance is required regarding Jack’s appearance and his resources and reasons for doing what he does, even though it’s based on actual events. Nevertheless, it’s a beautiful film—simply structured in its storytelling, beautifully photographed, and well-acted—and evokes the feeling of a classic period piece. 8/10
