Following his return from Europe after the Second World War, Taylor (played by John Hodiak) is marked by physical scars and struggles with memory loss. As fragments of his past resurface, he remembers a man who could potentially assist him and travels to Los Angeles in search of this individual. He soon realizes that locating him will be far from simple. After being attacked and left outside the home of Christy (Nancy Guild), he shares his story with her, prompting her to arrange an introduction to police lieutenant Kendall (Lloyd Nolan). The plot thickens at this point. It appears his acquaintance, referred to only as "Cravat," was involved in postwar money laundering and smuggling operations linked to Nazis, initiating a desperate search for the funds before they disappear – along with a possible killer. While the cast isn't comprised of major stars, they perform effectively together; no one dominates, which permits the narrative to unfold smoothly. This is more than just a standard crime story; unexpected turns arise, and the limited number of characters allows them to develop into more fleshed-out figures throughout this captivating investigation that leads to an exciting conclusion. Perhaps it runs slightly over its runtime, needing some time to gain momentum, but for those who enjoy this type of film, it’s among the better entries and merits viewing.
