It feels largely like a vehicle for Paul Newman and Henry Fonda to share the screen. A considerable portion involves lengthy depictions of logging operations as they diligently maintain their family’s business amidst a strike impacting nearby companies and generating local animosity. The arrival of the younger son, "Lee" (Michael Sarrazin), following an incident involving a stove, some marijuana, and the fire department, forces the family—which also features a noticeably underutilized Lee Remick—to confront difficult choices. It's predictable that sabotage will occur and that misfortune is inevitable, which diminishes any sense of suspense as the film progresses toward a fairly enjoyable ending, although that might be attributable to Henry Mancini’s lively soundtrack. While it occasionally offers insights into how perseverance can lead to success, ultimately it’s a vibrant but somewhat underwhelming narrative.
