John Chard on Something Wicked This Way Comes

7/10 · Oct 13, 2019

Troubled by difficulties during filming, with Disney reportedly concerned about its unsettling nature, Something Wicked This Way Comes generated strongly differing reactions. It turns out to be an eerie but suitable horror story for families. The narrative follows the Pandemonium Carnival as it arrives in a quiet American town, seemingly fulfilling people’s desires. Naturally, this situation is unsustainable, and after two young boys uncover the carnival's hidden truths, they find themselves targeted by its proprietor, Mr. Dark, portrayed with delightful menace by Jonathan Pryce. Under the direction of Jack Clayton (known for The Innocents) and featuring cinematography by Stephen H. Burum, the film is considerably darker than Disney initially intended. While it doesn’t fully capture Bradbury's literary style, those involved have created a thoughtful and atmospheric tale that looks and sounds wonderful thanks to its otherworldly music. It feels like a carefully constructed nightmare from a strict moral viewpoint; although the underlying symbolism and themes are emphasized, it remains an unusual combination of frightening elements and charming fantasy. 7/10
