I just can’t find the humor in this film. Curtis and Lemmon disguise themselves as showgirls to evade some gangsters. That premise could work well enough for a short bit, but not an entire feature film. And that's where the issues lie; it feels drawn out into something unpleasant. There's a subplot about a man having a fondness for Lemmon in drag, which he then tries to avoid. Similarly, Curtis develops an interest in a rather ordinary showgirl—Marilyn Monroe’s appeal was always being accessible and relatable, not competing with the classic Hollywood glamour of someone like Dawn Welles or Raquel Welch. But how many people have the good fortune of having Dawn Welles as their neighbor? That explains why Marilyn's more natural appearance resonated with audiences. The "comedy" felt old-fashioned even back in the sixties. I doubt it was particularly amusing in 1959, but apparently it’s intended for those who enjoy a very understated style of humor masked by physical gags, or whatever one might call this awkward effort at being funny. It's not awful, and it isn't upsetting, but it's undeniably boring—which is bad news for a comedy.
