It’s hard to understand why a movie featuring Anthony Hopkins, Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Abbie Cornish would go straight to video on demand in the United States. The film moves along very well, showcasing these talented performers effectively. Two decades ago, this picture likely would have received a broader theatrical run—not necessarily a blockbuster success, but something more modest that would have earned back its investment and then some. Instead, it bypassed movie theaters entirely. Was there simply too much competition for screen space? Did the popularity of films like "Beauty and the Beast" occupy so many screens that “Solace” couldn't find room? Or did someone worry that American viewers wouldn’t understand the word "solace"? I doubt I am joking about this. There was a similar situation years ago when Timothy Dalton was Bond; a planned second feature film, initially titled "License Revoked," was renamed "License to Kill" because studio executives were concerned audiences wouldn't grasp the meaning of “revoked.” Eventually, they decided against that fear and released "Quantum of Solace"—proving we weren’t all as clueless as they thought. I can’t explain why this good film wasn't shown at my local cinema or anywhere else in a wide release; it truly deserved to be seen by more people.
