John Chard on Sodom and Gomorrah

5/10 · Sep 10, 2019

The question of whether Hebrews and Sodomites can live together seems to be at the heart of what "Sodom and Gomorrah" is attempting to explore. Robert Aldrich directed the film, with a screenplay by Hugo Butler and Giorgio Prosperi. The cast includes Stewart Granger, Stanley Baker, Pier Angeli, Rossana Podestà, Giacomo Rossi-Stuart, and Scilla Gabel. Miklós Rózsa composed the music, while Silvano Ippoliti, Cyril J. Knowles, and Mario Montuori handled the cinematography. The film presents "The Last Days of Sodom and Gomorrah." Despite deviating from elements of the biblical narrative, it’s ultimately an unsuccessful movie. It feels like a worn-out religious epic, with Granger and Baker struggling to acknowledge how far their characters have fallen amidst a group of unremarkable performers attempting to create a passable sword-and-sandal film. The film suffers from a lack of energy; the European production can't quite hide how drawn out and tedious the story becomes. While it occasionally looks good – Ken Adam’s set design is impressive, and the photography in Morocco and Italy provides an appropriate setting – the finale feels contrived and poorly made, revealing that there has been too much dialogue-driven plotting and not enough action to keep audiences engaged. It earns a 5/10 rating.
