Charlie, played by Mike Myers, is a San Francisco poet with Scottish roots who struggles to find romantic success due to an underlying anxiety. His life takes a turn when he meets Harriet, portrayed by Nancy Travis, who works as a butcher and seems willing to overlook his shortcomings. Simultaneously, the media is saturated with reports about “Mrs. X,” a serial killer targeting husbands in a manner reminiscent of a black widow spider’s manipulative relationships. As Charlie and Harriet grow closer, he starts to wonder if she could possibly be this deadly spouse-slayer. Thankfully, he has his police officer friend Tony (Anthony LaPaglia) to assist him in uncovering the truth, but does he have enough time, and should he even be concerned? I've never particularly connected with Myers’s comedic style, and as someone of Scottish heritage, I often find stereotypical depictions of Scotland irritating. However, here he collaborates effectively with Brenda Fricker and Rod Stewart (who isn't actually Scottish) to deliver a lighthearted conspiracy-driven comedy-thriller featuring some clever distractions and a plot that takes unexpected turns toward an ending that’s surprisingly not what you anticipate. LaPaglia’s appearances are infrequent, but his attempts to take control of a vehicle, particularly near the end, elicit amusement—and the film playfully mocks clichés while simultaneously presenting a somewhat bleak view of marriage as a haven for death. It's not a masterpiece, and occasionally it can feel immature, but it moves along pleasantly for ninety minutes.
