I’m not usually into horror films; they just need to go way over the top for me to even consider them. It's typically some pretty weak element that gets stuck in my head and won’t leave, no matter how hard I try. My work—particularly time spent in a psychiatric secure unit—has shown me that the most frightening things are what people can inflict on one another. I saw *Snowtown* when it first came out, and it had this uncanny sense of authenticity. The way events play out makes it easy to picture yourself getting pulled into something like that, realizing you’re in too deep with no apparent escape. I'm not sure if viewers in the States would connect with it the same way, or maybe it’s just because we had so little growing up. It seems like now someone might suddenly offer a bit of attention and "grooming" was never even something people thought about. Then you find out that for at least one child, this was all a terrible dream from which they would never wake. After that, you're reading every news story and article to immerse yourself in the details of the case. Thirteen years later, it’s like I’ve experienced every agonizing moment of what happened. There’s no getting away from it. You try to cleanse yourself—all the sweat, blood, and grime—but you'll never be able to take a bath again. Seriously, I actually had my tub taken out. Absolutely incredible!
