This Bigfoot movie, clearly inspired by "Jaws" and made for television, has some appealing qualities. The scenery is beautiful—the film showcases the alpine setting of Crested Butte Mountain Ski Resort in Colorado—and the cast is quite pleasant to watch, featuring Robert Logan, Bo Svenson, Yvette Mimieux, and Clint Walker. Even the creature itself looks pretty good considering it was a made-for-TV production, though appearances are fleeting. However, the storyline borrows heavily from "Jaws," following its structure almost exactly. The setting is changed to a ski resort, and the shark becomes a sasquatch, but otherwise, the narrative unfolds in a remarkably similar fashion. A parallel exists with a scene in “Jaws” where a bear is hunted down and killed, leading skiers to believe the danger has passed; similarly, characters in "Snowbeast" suspect the creature's identity isn’t what it seems, even going so far as suggesting an examination of the bear’s insides for evidence. I wonder if Peter Benchley received any payments! Despite these shared elements, "Snowbeast" doesn't capture the tension or excitement found in “Jaws.” It can be a bit dull, but it might be enjoyable if you're craving something set in a snowy mountain environment or are fans of the actors involved. Any movie with Clint Walker is hard to completely dismiss, and Yvette Mimieux looks good in her ski attire. I’ve watched "Snowbeast" on three separate occasions and always find some enjoyment in it, even acknowledging its lack of originality and somewhat slow pace. It's definitely something Bigfoot enthusiasts should check out, as well as those who appreciate the cast or the picturesque alpine locations. Just remember what you’re getting into: it’s a 1970s television movie. The film has a running time of 1 hour and 37 minutes. GRADE: C+
