“Snow Angels,” released in 2007, presents a drama centered on several couples—both young and older—living in a Northeastern community during the winter months (filmed in Nova Scotia). While some viewers might describe the film as depressing, that’s not entirely accurate. It isn't wholly bleak, nor does it leave you feeling down afterward. There are moments of beauty and hope interwoven with shadows and darkness. The story prompts reflection on real-life individuals who bear resemblance to the characters. One particular storyline is tragic and disheartening, though it doesn’t represent the entire narrative; instead, the film explores romantic relationships at different stages, examining whether they succeed or fail based on how couples navigate life's inevitable crises and temptations. Arthur and Lila are experiencing a budding high school romance that seems promising. Meanwhile, Glenn and Annie’s relationship has been damaged by Glenn’s alcoholism, anger issues, and obsessive tendencies; Annie wants to move forward but takes an unwise course of action—a treacherous one! Glenn is attempting to overcome his personal struggles, even embracing religion, yet he finds it difficult to let go of his former partner and move on. His internal battle between positive and negative forces feels very real. Both Sam Rockwell and Kate Beckinsale deliver outstanding performances, with Rockwell being particularly noteworthy; I’ve rarely seen such a believable and powerful portrayal. The audience witnesses his genuine desire for self-improvement, but foolish and selfish impulses surface when he faces rejection and tragedy. It remains to be seen if he will choose the path of wisdom or succumb to folly. Elsewhere, Nate and Barb's relationship encounters its first major challenge: Nate’s infidelity is revealed. Barb initially reacts with anger, until a tragic event reveals her compassionate nature. Arthur’s parents are separating, but there might still be hope for their relationship and family. Glenn’s parents represent a later stage of a committed relationship that appears to have been successful. Glenn's loyal dog stands in stark contrast to Annie, who treats Glenn with hostility and seeks to move on from him; while her feelings are understandable, the viewer can’t help but feel sympathy for Glenn given his sincere efforts to improve himself and reconcile with his ex. After all, he is genuine and humble, loves his daughter (and she loves him), and isn't a disloyal person. Pay attention to the final scene to learn Bomber’s fate. Note the scene where one of the main characters removes a painting of a cross from the wall; a child’s handprint accompanied by the word "me" is visible, signifying the direction he has chosen. The film offers hope despite the foolishness, tragedy, and criminal actions—hope that love will prevail, certain couples will remain together, and young couples will make wise decisions and avoid the pitfalls that destroy others. The outcome remains uncertain; yes, the younger couple appears happy and natural together, but most couples seem that way in the early years of their relationship. Although the film depicts hostility between two people, it’s also revealed that one person used to help the other focus on the positive aspects of life, offering comfort and support. A young character is shown experimenting with alcohol and marijuana; not everyone succumbs to negative influences when they try such things, but one main character clearly did. Will he? Only time and his choices—right or wrong—will provide the answers. After viewing the film, I read a story about a recent incident in Arizona that mirrors the central storyline. Such events do happen. “Snow Angels” reflects reality. Once seen, it’s unforgettable. Some will cherish it. My only criticism is that the camera work occasionally feels unsteady, which suggests amateurism. I understand the director was attempting to be innovative, but the camera shouldn't draw attention to itself. Trends fade away while solid filmmaking endures. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 47 minutes. GRADE: A-
