Dwayne Johnson's presence in this unremarkable film feels more focused on highlighting obscure US federal drug laws than offering anything new to the drama genre. He portrays a successful businessman, “Matthews,” whose son, “Jason” (Rafi Gavron), becomes involved in drug trafficking and faces a potential ten-year prison sentence. The father and son have a strained relationship, but Matthews isn’t willing to let Jason spend his life behind bars; therefore, he makes an agreement with the calculating and politically driven DA “Keeghan” (Susan Sarandon). His plan involves going undercover within a dangerous cartel, delivering their leader and money supply to her, in exchange for a lighter sentence for his son. Despite reservations from the experienced DEA agent “Cooper” (Barry Pepper), but aided by reformed individual “Daniel” (Jon Bernthal), he becomes deeply involved in a violent situation where even a small mistake could have deadly consequences. What unfolds afterward is strictly formulaic, featuring standard action sequences, chases, and double-crosses intended to maintain an active pace, though lacking originality. Sarandon’s appearances are too infrequent to significantly impact the story, and it remains unclear what the film intends to achieve, prolonging events into a lengthy truck chase that seems oddly subdued and inevitably leads to a predictable resolution. It's passable entertainment, but ultimately destined to be forgotten.
