It’s hard to believe, but here we go again… Snatch seems to be one of those British gangster movies that critics have trouble agreeing on, even though it's a favorite with the people who enjoy this kind of thing. Guy Ritchie has essentially done what Sam Raimi did, recreating the film that launched his career. Just as Raimi revisited The Evil Dead and called it Evil Dead II, Ritchie seems to be trying to get away with remaking Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and calling it Snatch. Okay, the plot is different, and there’s a well-known American actor added to attract a wider audience, but at its heart, it's the same movie – and that feels like pretty uninspired filmmaking. But despite all this—like Evil Dead II—it's still great! The story of Snatch revolves around a valuable diamond that connects several storylines in London’s criminal world. A group of rough Romany characters get involved, led by an intentionally hard-to-read Brad Pitt, while Dennis Farina, Benicio Del Toro and Rade Serbedzija add some international flavor to the collection of criminals and gangsters. Jason Statham and Stephen Graham provide the familiar British feel, with Vinnie Jones predictably appearing to intimidate everyone. You'll find everything from bare-knuckle fighting to clumsy robberies—to dog fighting and shady arcade businesses—all presented with characters that really jump off the screen. Like "Lock-Stock," what makes it work is how violence and humor are mixed together so well. Scenes can be brutal, but also incredibly funny; a clever line of dialogue is never far from a dangerous situation. The comedy here pushes boundaries, Ritchie having fun playing around with stereotypes about ethnicity and masculinity, before his visual style started to feel repetitive. The story is wonderfully complicated, but it’s to Ritchie's credit how he manages to tie everything together in a fast-paced sequence of scene transitions and confident storytelling. So, essentially, it's "Lock-Stock 2"! That's not necessarily a bad thing if you like that kind of rough and tumble style. If it isn't your cup of tea? Then move along. 8/10
