I hesitated about seeing this movie because I'd heard bad things, but surprisingly, it wasn't terrible. That’s quite a statement considering the initial impression was like those little guys from “Snow White” got lost and stumbled into some overly precious seaside town! The plot revolves around an unnamed "Smurf" who is working with "Smurfette" to figure out what he's good at, but nothing seems right – even when they consider things like making wooden shoes. He quickly gets caught up in a villainous scheme by the evil sorcerer “Razamel,” who’s searching for a magical book that would allow him to become part of some wizard group and get rid of "Papa Smurf" and all the other "Smurfs." What follows is a series of scenes reminiscent of “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice," complete with inter-dimensional travel, and plenty of chances for Rihanna to sing songs that seem to have been given more attention than the story itself – which isn't very good. It does keep a decent pace, though, and the narrative improves somewhat during about fifteen minutes of scheming near the end, bringing in some magical elements. The animation is nothing special; it mostly focuses on the main characters but includes many background figures that feel artificial and lifeless. It’s hard to say who this film is really intended for. Younger viewers probably won't recognize these characters or be very interested in how unoriginal and unsophisticated everything is. Those of us who recall those irritating blue creatures and their equally irritating songs from the early 1980s might enjoy a bit of nostalgia during the last thirty minutes, but otherwise, it’s a lengthy ninety minutes that probably shouldn't have been made at all.
