The visuals were a pleasant surprise; they exceeded what I expected based on the previews. The humor, both in dialogue and through visual gags, also landed effectively, at least for me. I didn’t care for the dynamic between Gargamel and Razamel. It would have been better if they had simply kept Gargamel as a solo character, allowing him to maintain his established personality. There were too many characters attempting to appear cool. Having one “cool” character is acceptable, but having them all striving for that image felt like it was heading toward the same problem seen in Marvel movies, where villains become figures of ridicule. The narrative itself was difficult to follow. It resembled an "Alice in Wonderland" experience, with a series of disconnected and brief scenarios playing out. There were also instances of contrived plot resolutions that could have been handled with emotional depth but instead felt resolved through convenient magic. The live-action sequences seemed entirely superfluous, even more so than they were in the previous Smurfs films starring Neil Patrick Harris. They just didn’t need to be there! They were odd too, because we had actual live actors alongside animated human characters like Gargamel and Razamel, which was a departure from earlier installments where Gargamel was also portrayed by a live actor. The movie would have benefited from omitting those scenes entirely. Ultimately, I found it somewhat disappointing; it had the potential to be quite good. The humor is enjoyable, and the visual style and gags are very effective, but the main story felt jumbled. It might appeal more to viewers who prioritize characters over a strong plot. A film with this artistic approach but using the storyline of the second live-action movie would have been appealing.
