"Smooth Talk," adapted from a Joyce Carol Oates story, features Laura Dern as a teenager feeling dissatisfied and looking for something more. The narrative centers on a young woman who believes she understands her own attractiveness and how to manage the attention it brings, but discovers otherwise. A disturbing and dreamlike sequence unfolds when an attractive man (played by Treat Williams) appears, forcing her to confront a lack of experience. The movie successfully conveys the same strange atmosphere found in the original story—particularly the encounter with Williams, which feels almost hallucinatory—while making adjustments necessary for a full-length film.
