The marketing for Smile really stood out, and those initial previews were the strongest aspect of the entire film; what followed felt thin on substance and relied heavily on jarring sound design and an excessive number of sudden shocks. Smile seemed determined to create a constant atmosphere of dread, but the music and audio cues instead just made things feel unpleasant. The storyline had echoes of It Follows, though it didn’t come close to achieving the same level of quality. The film felt like a series of predictable jump scares, leading me to shut my eyes at times simply because I anticipated what was coming and grew weary of disturbing visuals being thrust before me. While Sosie Bacon delivered a commendable performance—the only truly positive element—overall, Smile failed to impress, attempting to disguise its lack of substance with an onslaught of startling moments and jarring noises.
