A tale of pursuing lost love across the ocean unfolds in this western film, though surprisingly filmed entirely in New Zealand. While fundamentally a road movie, it weaves in other elements—like nighttime camp scenes—to reveal aspects of the plot. The pacing felt deliberate and the storyline fairly conventional, yet I still found myself invested. Holding out until the very end, particularly when the romantic puzzle pieces fall into place, might enhance your enjoyment. The conclusion proved to be quite good, delivering a classic western-style gunfight, though it wasn’t intended as a display of heroism; rather, earlier events led directly to that final confrontation and what followed. It carries an R rating due to moments of brutality and its adherence to the genre's conventions. While this may not mark a spectacular beginning for the director—despite the prominent cast, substantial budget, and absence of massive commercial success—he succeeded in crafting a satisfying film with a straightforward approach. Kodi Smith-McPhee, nearing twenty, hasn’t yet had the opportunity to portray a truly independent and impactful character that would garner recognition. Initially, it seemed as if the film was entirely his; he appeared present throughout. However, as the story progressed, especially towards the end, his presence diminished somewhat. Nevertheless, he performed admirably alongside Michael Fassbender. It's not essential viewing, but also not something you should pass up if given the opportunity. 7.5/10
