The special effects occasionally resembled something out of an older "Dr. Who" series, but after a while, this bug-and-zombie horror film proves to be genuinely enjoyable. Following the arrival of a meteorite near a small town in America, its slimy inhabitant infects the local leader, “Grant” (played by Michael Rooker), who had gone into the woods seeking solace with beer after his wife, "Starla" (Elizabeth Banks), rejected him. Consequently, things became complicated for him. Meanwhile, she’s long held a fondness for the attractive local sheriff, “Bill” (Nathan Fillion), which could be helpful when he is called upon to investigate why all the town's pets have vanished. Is her husband—or perhaps his strange, blistering skin condition—connected to these unsettling events? The plot is largely familiar, and viewers will likely recognize echoes of earlier films by John Carpenter, Hammer Films, or even David Cronenberg, but there’s still sufficient originality and playful humor to keep the story moving at a good pace as its own entity. The performances are acceptable, as is the script, and beyond potentially making your next shower somewhat unsettling, it's an agreeable and bloody romp that I found myself liking.
