Having experienced the earlier version featuring Olivier and Caine, it's probable that this adaptation loses some of its suspense, particularly as Sir Michael’s character, "Andrew," brings the charming “Milo” (played by Jude Law) to his contemporary country estate. There, Andrew proposes a strategy allowing him to maintain an affair with his wife while also ensuring they can continue their lavish lifestyle. The question arises: does this confident young man possess the intelligence to outwit the experienced and cunning "Andrew"? Will there be an agreement that satisfies both of them? Michael Caine is initially quite captivating as the central figure for roughly the first thirty minutes, but the plot itself ultimately falters in its believability. As the story progressed into what felt like a second act, I found the momentum and core idea too fragile to maintain my interest. It seemed that most of the creative energy was focused on the initial portion of the film, with the remainder simply setting up an ending that occasionally feels playful, even subtly suggestive (“Milo” is a hairdresser). However, this ultimately dissipates due to excessive and loud conversations that largely destroy the initially enjoyable relationship between the two characters. The cinematography certainly favors Jude Law, and there are moments worth noting, but they aren't enough to make this remake comparable to the original, nor is it something I expect to recall fondly.
