“Milo” (Michael Caine) finds himself at the impressive home of a famous crime novelist – someone akin to a male Agatha Christie – where he must unravel a complicated situation to locate his voice. The polished “Andrew” (Sir Laurence Olivier) gives his guest a warm greeting and leads him inside. It’s like stumbling into a treasure trove filled with theatrical costumes and props, which makes "Milo" feel somewhat uneasy. He's about to feel even more unsettled when “Andrew” reveals he knows about the affair his wife is having and seems unconcerned about her departure, as long as he can secure insurance on £175,000 worth of valuables. The challenge becomes figuring out how to steal them without raising suspicion of an inside job. Luckily, there are plenty of disguises at hand, and a clever scheme begins to take shape. However, this plan has unforeseen repercussions that quickly put the unfortunate “Milo” in a difficult position. Feeling pleased with his evening’s work, “Andrew” prepares for some caviar when he discovers he has an unexpected guest who throws a wrench into his plans and starts to reverse the situation. Now it's a contest of intelligence! Olivier and Caine carry the film remarkably entertainingly, thanks to a well-crafted plot, script, impressive gadgets, and a generous helping of psychologically driven revenge. It’s perhaps the most genuine I’ve ever seen Olivier on screen, although that might be because he doesn’t seem to be doing much actual acting until close to the end. Caine demonstrates his versatility as well, showing there's more to him than just playing stereotypical East End characters in tailored suits. The ending didn't entirely satisfy me, but throughout it’s a story divided into two parts where danger is constant for both the characters and the audience! It’s an elegant production featuring two actors who appear to be genuinely enjoying themselves, which is infectious.
