John Chard on Sleeping Beauty

9/10 · Aug 20, 2015

A gorgeous Disney movie tells a lovely fairytale story. After an evil sorceress casts a spell on a baby princess, condemning her to slumber indefinitely when she turns sixteen, three fairy godmothers hide her away so she can live a normal life and remain unaware of who she is. However, will they be able to prevent the curse from taking effect once her sixteenth birthday arrives? Making this film was a significant investment for Disney, requiring ten years of work. The filmmakers aimed high, employing innovative methods like rotoscoping, and the musical score is exceptionally crafted using music from Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty ballet. The narrative itself is a genuine pleasure, drawn from Charles Perrault’s timeless fairytale, filled with memorable characters—most notably the three fairy godmothers, Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather, who are plump and endearing—while the wicked Maleficent is wonderfully realized, sporting a long pointed chin and horns. There's an abundance of delightful moments as the fairies use their magic and playfully tease each other, but Sleeping Beauty truly shines during its dramatic scenes. The frightening dream sequence that draws Briar Rose (Princess Aurora) toward the cursed spinning wheel is unsettling, and the fight between Prince Phillip and Maleficent is thrilling, showcasing the animators’ considerable skill. And the colors are just fantastic! When it first came out, it didn't achieve the level of success Disney had anticipated, but time has been very generous to Sleeping Beauty. It's a film that both children and adults can enjoy and escape into. 9/10
