Sleepaway Camp is an independent horror film created by Robert Hiltzik, who wrote, directed, and produced it. The film introduces a very young Felissa Rose as Angela Baker, alongside local actors Jonathan Tiersten, Karen Fields, and Christopher Collet. It also features a rare appearance from Robert Earl Jones, brother of James Earl Jones. A noteworthy detail is that this was the final film role for Mike Kellin, who passed away from lung cancer in August of 1983. The movie premiered in US theaters on November 18th, 1983 and unexpectedly became a success. Angela Baker and her cousin Ricky are attending summer camp at Camp Arawak; this was Angela's first time while Ricky had been going for some time. Things don’t exactly go smoothly. The camp is full of unpleasant people – creeps, jerks, and generally awful individuals. And someone seems to be trying to kill everyone! This doesn't make things easier for young Angela, who just wants to be left alone. Today we are looking at Sleepaway Camp, an iconic horror movie with a final scene that will stick with you for years. It’s representative of its time in terms of style and fashion, capturing the summer camp atmosphere better than many other films set in similar locations; it even surpasses some Friday the 13th movies centered around Camp Crystal Lake. The film isn't hesitant to explore challenging subjects. It tackles themes like gender roles and child molestation while also incorporating some funny moments typical of a summer camp setting. The characters are exaggerated, but with elements of realism woven in. While some dialogue feels cheesy at times, it can also feel very authentic. The arguments and disagreements between the campers are well done. I’ve always felt that kids using strong language really came into its own during the mid-seventies through the eighties, and the language used in this movie is exceptional; I appreciate that. Sleepaway Camp stands out as an original and skillfully made slasher film. Every character who meets their end is unlikeable and deserving of what happens to them. The pedophile cook was a particular highlight for me – he’s truly awful and gets his comeuppance in a very satisfying way. And it’s true that the ending is unforgettable; you can take my word for it. Sleepaway Camp won't appeal to everyone, especially parents or those with strict moral views; it will likely be offensive to many. However, there are numerous great qualities that set this film apart from others. It fits perfectly into horror movie marathons and is a regular choice for Halloween parties. If you enjoy this film, I would recommend Wet Hot American Summer and Friday the 13th as well – both are classics from different genres that complement Sleepaway Camp very well.
