A darkly humorous, sarcastic, and unconventional film. Paul Newman portrays the coach of The Charlestown Chiefs, a struggling minor league hockey team facing financial difficulties in a town suffering from unemployment. It seems likely that this will be their final season unless the coach can inspire them to a winning run, potentially attracting a buyer and saving jobs for those involved. The team's management introduces three unusual brothers who, when they join the lineup, lead the team on an intense winning streak all the way to the championship game. As crowds gather eager for more action, complications begin to emerge. Slap Shot is genuinely hilarious, although it also contains considerable violence and frequently uses crude language. These elements are integral to what makes it a clever and insightful sports film. The hockey scenes are impressive, even for someone unfamiliar with the sport, and the dialogue is full of sharp, blunt humor. Upon its initial release, many critics disapproved of Slap Shot, finding it too offensive and critical in its portrayal of a win-at-all-costs mentality. However, it’s now rightly recognized as the intelligent film that director George Roy Hill intended, with an expanding audience discovering and appreciating it each year. Newman was a major star; his hair had turned silver, but he remained handsome, and his performance has a certain elegance despite its cynical take on professional hockey—even if his character's wardrobe is somewhat unpleasant. It would be unfair to overlook the contribution of the Hanson Brothers, arguably one of the best ensembles in sports movie history. They are simultaneously endearing and gleefully violent; they’re essential to the film’s success. The cast also includes strong supporting performances from Strother Martin, Michael Ontkean, Jennifer Warren, Lindsay Crouse, and Jerry Houser. Following my initial writing of this review, Paul Newman unfortunately died, leaving behind a remarkable body of work, and this is certainly one of his finest achievements. It's a sports film that remains consistently funny and rewarding with each viewing. 8.5/10
