If you're a fan of The Rock, this high-octane action movie with disaster and special effects might be entertaining enough. Otherwise, you’d probably need to really enjoy special effects and action to get past its shortcomings. Let’s begin with the positives. One thing is certain: it stars The Rock—and yes, I am a fan—though he isn't exactly at his best here. Personally, I could have lived without the artificial leg plot point, but ultimately it didn’t bother me too much. It really didn’t add anything except for some silly and unrealistic scenes. The action sequences and special effects were as good as you would anticipate from a big-budget action film. At least, that's what I thought. I especially appreciated the design of the Skyscraper; it struck me as both cool and beautiful—I even kind of want to see one built in real life. Is the movie derivative? Of course it is! How many times can you make a movie about burning skyscrapers and bad guys hijacking them before it becomes predictable? The first film called *Skyscraper* was made back in 1928, for goodness sake. It didn’t detract from my enjoyment at all. Now, let's get to the negatives. The plot was incredibly predictable; you could easily identify the villains from their very first scene. Mr. Pierce, with his rat-like face, is a prime example. The main antagonist wasn’t exactly memorable—certainly not on par with Hans Gruber. He felt more like an ordinary thug than anything else. Overall, most of the movie played out in a predictable way, from the bad guy's introduction to the systems being reset. The film also had some serious issues with realism. I don’t expect complete accuracy from an action and special effects movie, but there are limits. Sawyer climbing around the exterior of the building (remember, he has one leg) in the updraft from fifty burning levels was just ridiculous. And a building burning that intensely for so long while all the electrical wiring and plumbing still work? That stretched credibility too far. The worst part, though, was how everyone miraculously survived sitting in the middle of the fire when it was put out by some kind of gas release. It demonstrated a new level of stupidity—or perhaps laziness—in the writing. In conclusion, this movie had potential to be much better. For me, it was salvaged by The Rock and my fondness for action movies packed with special effects.
