It's possible this film requires a certain level of enthusiasm for science fiction to fully appreciate, but I can’t quite grasp why people seem so disappointed with it; I actually found myself enjoying it. The story unfolds some time after the events of Beyond Skyline, the second installment in the series. It’s disappointing that they opted for an apocalyptic backdrop where humanity doesn't appear to have gained anything from their newfound allies or the technology they obtained earlier on. Regrettably, the writers also went with a fairly conventional Hollywood villain—the psychopathic General Radford who seems intent on destruction. The options for portraying antagonists in these kinds of movies feel rather restricted at this point. Setting aside the uninspired antagonist and the weak plot that stemmed from that decision (I’m not sure which was responsible, the silly story or the lackluster character), what's left is a genuinely good action film featuring some impressive special effects. There's plenty of action sequences—both martial arts-based and those involving more gunfire. The scenes set in space are also well done, and the monsters make a return, with a few new types added to the mix. Overall, I did enjoy the movie. It doesn’t demand much thought from the audience, but it's still a pretty good film. What bothered me, aside from the foolish General, was Rose’s powers failing at crucial times, even after she supposedly resolved the interference caused by the “queen.”
