My son and I have been working our way through the James Bond films, watching two each weekend since starting with Dr. No a while back. We got to the Daniel Craig movies last weekend, which were new for me to experience. Despite being a big fan of Sean Connery, I must say that the first couple we watched weren’t bad at all. However, today's viewing was Skyfall, and what on earth…? This doesn't feel like a James Bond film! If it had been presented as something else, I probably would have thought it was acceptable enough. But because it claims to be a James Bond movie, it’s just awful—complete rubbish. It’s a Hollywood drama written by someone who clearly has no regard for the franchise or its longtime fans. James Bond is supposed to be tracking down international villains—villains with some real charisma, I should add. Instead, we got this repulsive character motivated by a grudge because M didn’t save him when he messed up. The British Secret Service ought to be exactly that: a strong organization safeguarding Britain (and the rest of the world) from communists, terrorists, criminal organizations like Spectre, or whatever. Scenes where M is essentially on trial and having to justify herself before a group of clueless politicians are just nonsense—not what you’d expect in a James Bond film. The entire movie is loaded with sensationalism, politically correct elements, the disposal of well-liked characters, sentimental fluff, and other things you'd anticipate from a Hollywood soap opera. And the new Q? A dull kid with an inflated sense of self—not enjoyable at all. Even the special effects are questionable. If you’re going to stage a subway train crash by blowing a hole in its path, for goodness sake put some crash test dummies or something in it to at least pretend it isn't just a hollow prop! This is without question the worst Bond film I have ever seen. My level of disappointment with this movie is hard to express.
