SoapboxQuantez08 on Skinwalkers

8/10 · Mar 30, 2017

Skinwalkers really delivers. The film benefited from the involvement of Stan Winston, who was responsible for the creature effects—and these aren't computer-generated werewolves; they’re tangible creations. Or at least, that’s the impression you get. Elias Koteas, familiar to viewers from The Prophecy, plays Jonas Talbot, the uncle of a 12-year-old boy whose fate is to become the solution to lycanthropy on his thirteenth birthday. There's an unusual amount of gunfire for a werewolf movie; in fact, the director noted it was filmed “like a western.” A particular shootout at Huguenot mirrors a scene from The Professional—a quiet moment before things erupt. The film incorporates several distinctive features, including a falcon that actively searches for the boy, drawn to the skinwalkers who favor death over being cured. It's never entirely clear how this child is meant to reverse lycanthropy, but I believe the ending’s reveal is surprisingly inventive and believable. If you appreciate films with fresh ideas, suspense, and Natassia Malthe wearing a biker top, it might be worth seeing. It earns a rating of 7.5 out of 10.
