It’s genuinely difficult to sit through this film. Jamie Bell and Guy Nattiv seem to have really succeeded in portraying the mindset of a gang leader who is both controlling and authoritarian, as well as the mental state of those who follow him. They also depict the psychology of someone who has been mistreated and feels stuck, but desires escape, and ultimately, the remarkable tolerance and affection needed to help someone move beyond such circumstances. It might not be enjoyable, but the narrative appears strikingly realistic.
