Skin Game, primarily directed by Paul Bogart and penned by Richard Alan Simmons and Peter Stone, features James Garner, Louis Gossett Jr., Susan Clark, Brenda Sykes, Edward Asner, and Andrew Duggan in its cast. David Shire composed the music, with Fred J. Koenekamp handling the cinematography. The film is set in America during slavery times, following two con men who travel from place to place, tricking white people into buying a Black man, Jason O’Rourke (played by Gossett Jr.). After Quincy Drew (Garner) makes an agreement, the pair later meet up to take off and divide the money. That's a good scheme until women and other observant individuals get involved... Skin Game is a visually appealing Panavision/Technicolor production; it’s a little-known comedy Western, not because of its quality, but probably due to what is now considered politically incorrect content. It’s unfortunate, as while the movie doesn't fully utilize the potential of its concept, it's quite enjoyable and benefits from solid performances by the main actors. As the duo journeys through various towns with memorable names like Dirty Shame and Bitter End, several amusing moments keep the tone lighthearted, whether it’s a bathing scene, Jason’s tears, or some playful banter; the comedy is understated and easy to appreciate. Clark's appearance elevates the film because her character is even more mischievous than Quincy and Jason, adding extra enjoyment to an already funny experience. The plot feels unrealistic, so it’s not unexpected when things inevitably fall apart, although the attempt to examine the prejudice of that time doesn't leave a strong impression. Nevertheless, the positive aspects of the film outweigh its shortcomings, making it a movie worth seeking out. 7/10
