The movie *Skate Kitchen* came about unexpectedly. Crystal Moselle, who wrote and directed it, first encountered Nina Moran and Rachelle Vinberg—who are members of the Skate Kitchen group and also appear in the film—while they were talking on a subway train in Brooklyn. Captivated by what she heard, Moselle inquired if she could join them at their upcoming skateboarding gathering. Both Moran and Vinberg said yes, which started the collaboration that led to one short movie (*That One Day*), the feature *Skate Kitchen*, and an HBO show called *Betty* that was unfortunately discontinued before its time.
