Ranga Ramanuja on Sita Ramam

10/10 · Sep 11, 2024

This is the greatest love story ever. The greatest movie ever. This truly feels like cinema. I’ve never felt such a strong connection to anything—aside from my career aspirations—and I've never loved characters as much as I love Ram and Sita, apart from my family and Prabhas. They embody exactly what I envision when I think of male and female leads in a romance, and the story itself is everything I’d hoped for. It goes beyond just being a film; it's something more. As someone who has always loved romantic stories, I’ve often been let down by movies because of interruptions, short runtime, or other issues. But with Sita Ramam, I feel completely satisfied. Even though the actress doesn't appear until 49 minutes in, and their time together is less than 90 minutes, even though there are many characters, all I think about when I hear “Sita Ramam” is the chemistry between Ram and Sita. Not a single scene feels out of place; everything is interwoven. Even the political elements revolve around Ram and Sita's story, ultimately connecting to reveal its depth. I used to believe that classic films were a thing of the past, but the team behind Sita Ramam proved me wrong. They demonstrated that timeless storytelling can still resonate, regardless of changing times or modern culture—it gives me hope for future films. For years, I’ve combined elements from different classic love stories in my mind, creating what I considered to be a perfect movie. I daydreamed about this ideal film countless times. It feels incredible that I finally got to see something so close to my dream; it felt like watching my own imagination come to life. Sita Ramam is virtually flawless. If the romance had ended after Ram went to Kashmir, I would have been disappointed, but when that woman says "Vaallu vidipoyaru ani evaru chepparu," I was thrilled—that’s the most satisfying moment. Every aspect of the film, from the direction and cinematography to the script, music, editing, costumes, makeup, everything reached its peak. The background music is beautiful, and the songs are perfect for this movie; I could write pages about them and the dialogue. In a letter, Sita says, "Ninna rathri oo kala occhindhi, Kalalo niku aravai yellu. Inka na chuttu ne thiruguthunav. Em kavalanna Sita.. Sita.. ani pilusthunav." It’s overwhelming to think about how true that is; it always moves me and makes me feel both happy and sad (tears welling up while writing this). Each time I watch it, I tell myself I won't cry again because I've seen it so many times, but it happens every time. It takes days to recover from the experience, and I find myself thinking of them as real people, feeling saddened that Sita is only left with memories of Ram, and imagining how happy they would have been together if he had returned. No, I’m not crazy (entirely). This story of Sita and Ram isn't just a movie; it's an entire world—a world I want to live in more than this reality. Why is everything about this film so perfect? Why are the characters of Ram and Sita so perfect? Why is their love so ideal? It’s hard to believe that two such extraordinary people could find each other and love like this. I truly adore Sita Ramam. It far exceeded my expectations for Prabhas' film, Radhe Shyam; I had hoped it would become a classic romance but was disappointed. Yet, within less than five months, I received exactly what I wanted. Even the visuals of Sita Ramam are more impressive, despite the difference in budgets (aside from one or two scenes in Radhe Shyam). After seeing Sita Ramam for the first time in a theater, I immediately booked tickets for the next showing that same day. I saw it three times in theaters and planned to go a fourth time but couldn't. I felt disappointed until now, when I finally got to relive this epic on the big screen again. Now I need to take breaks between viewings so I can experience it in theaters repeatedly. If you only "like" this movie instead of loving it, we can’t be friends. Even after all that I've written, I still feel like I haven't fully expressed myself; there are countless more feelings inside me—at least ten times more than what I’ve put into words. I don't know how to convey them. All I can say is that I love Sita Ramam so much. If I owned a theater, I would screen Sita Ramam on the first of every month. I relate to Ram in many ways (not necessarily the romantic part—I’ve never been in love—but that's how I want to love someone). I’ve envisioned Sita Mahalakshmi even before Hanu started writing the script. Thank you, Hanu Sir, for bringing my dream to life. I hadn’t written a review of this film anywhere until now, but I’m sharing it for the first anniversary of the movie—it will forever be a classic. Edit on February 14th, 2024: Finally, my desire to see Sita Ramam again in theaters after waiting more than a year has been fulfilled with today's rerelease. Just the title card alone is worth everything (the travel, ticket price, time—everything). It was exactly what I needed during these difficult times. Please rerelease this every year; I want to experience it on an even bigger and better screen. If that happens, I’ll be there for at least three shows that day.
