It's genuinely entertaining to witness a single individual violently eliminate numerous wicked Nazis, and the WWII action movie “Sisu” delivers a savage, bloody thrill ride. This late-night offering from writer-director Jalmari Helander adopts an approach reminiscent of comic books, blending graphic violence with humor and a powerful narrative about bravery and resolve. As World War II nears its conclusion, a lone prospector (Jorma Tommila) in the remote Lapland wilderness of Northern Finland searches for gold alongside his only companion: his dog. Their journey leads them to a group of Nazis who have left devastation behind them. Recognizing an easy opportunity, the soldiers steal the man's substantial bag of gold. They failed to realize that the person they angered is far from ordinary. The prospector turns out to be a former commando—a legendary figure—who will stop at nothing to reclaim his treasure, transforming into a one-person killing machine determined to eliminate every Nazi in his path. The film’s name derives from the Finnish concept of “sisu,” which represents an intense form of courage and remarkable determination when confronting seemingly insurmountable challenges. It's an excellent foundation for a story, and Helander develops a myth that feels both outlandish and believable. The movie is structured into chapters, each contributing another layer to the storyline (including a surprising and uplifting segment that celebrates women’s strength). Those seeking constant action might perceive the film as slow at times, but the character development is handled effectively—the rhythm actually feels nearly flawless. Helander seems to know exactly what audiences are anticipating: a classic Nazi slaughter. Once the violence begins, it doesn't let down. There are shootings, stabbings, hangings, burnings, and various forms of complete destruction. Limbs are scattered, men are crushed by tanks, and even a horse meets a gruesome end, among other things. As the body count rises, the applause for each fallen Nazi intensifies. “Sisu” is a well-made action film that provides considerable enjoyment. While there's plenty of bloodshed, it also features an engaging dramatic progression that quietly escalates into a resounding climax.
