Sisu, a Finnish production, isn’t directed by Quentin Tarantino, but it shares a similar sensibility regarding graphic violence. The movie revels in brutality, presenting it through some inventive and disturbing methods. I have to admit I found the entire presentation excessive. What lingered with me throughout was the understanding that conflict is not something to be taken lightly or treated as a spectacle. My childhood was spent among individuals who experienced and, at times, participated in World War II. The stories they shared were frequently sorrowful and heartbreaking, describing people caught within circumstances beyond their control. However, Sisu moves along well, the plot unfolds clearly, and there’s plenty of diverse action sequences. The performances are good, but the storytelling is truly what carries the film forward. It also brings to mind spaghetti Westerns, reimagined with a World War II setting. Ultimately, if you enjoy films focused on gore, this one might appeal to you. Just remember that actual people suffered and perished during WWII, both as victims and combatants; it wasn't a diversion or something to be enjoyed.
