Whoopi Goldberg and Dame Maggie Smith both deliver excellent performances in this entertaining comedy thriller. Goldberg portrays Deloris van Cartier, who inadvertently sees her gangster boyfriend commit murder. Following this, when she’s asked to provide evidence against him, she's placed into a unique witness protection program. Her refuge becomes a convent where she is guided by Dame Maggie’s character, Mother Superior. After some initial disagreements about practically everything, Goldberg—now known as Sister Mary Clarence—discovers a sense of belonging within the choir and soon that choir gains worldwide recognition; even the Pope plans to attend their performance. Naturally, this attention brings complications, and her boyfriend, Vince (Harvey Keitel), manages to locate her. Will she be saved from his dangerous intentions? It's a pleasant film to watch. The movie moves along well, featuring numerous lively musical sequences, and both Goldberg and Smith—along with the spirited Mary Wickes as Sister Mary Lazarus—seem to genuinely enjoy working with the humorous and briskly paced script. The ending is fairly predictable, relying on some slapstick that felt excessive for my taste before a celebratory appearance before the Pope! Honestly, it's hard to find any serious faults with this film; it’s simply good fun.
