**A top-tier comedy from recent years.** This movie was a big hit when it first came out, and it still has a large following today. It’s one of those easygoing comedies that feels fresh no matter how much time passes, and it's always enjoyable to watch again. The script is well-crafted, centering on Deloris, a singer who needs protection from the police after seeing her lover—a married gangster—murder someone. To keep her safe, the authorities place her in a convent, where she has to pretend to be a nun. Naturally, much of the humor comes from watching a performer adjust to such a rigid and disciplined setting. The film is very effective; even with the years gone by, it feels surprisingly modern and doesn’t feel dated at all. It's the kind of movie you can watch repeatedly without losing interest, and that many people still think fondly of. The filmmaking isn't spectacular—the camera work and editing are standard, though the sets and costumes are good—and there aren’t any elaborate action sequences or other complex technical aspects. The cast is impressive and full of skilled performers. Whoopi Goldberg, who was having a particularly successful period (having recently won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in _Ghost_), becomes something of a legend with this film. She's joined by Maggie Smith, Kanthy Najimi, Wendy Makkena, and Mary Wickes, all portraying memorable nuns. Harvey Keitel delivers a solid performance as the antagonist.
