The story unfolds in a segregated America, during a period when tensions between Black and white communities were rising. Movies set in this time offer a glimpse into a significant portion of American history—a facet that the nation seems reluctant to confront openly. Michael B. Jordan portrays twin characters named Stack and Smoke, and I found this particularly noteworthy because it’s not often an actor successfully handles such roles. There's a clear rapport between Michael B. Jordan and director Ryan Coogler, and their collaborations consistently result in compelling stories. The film initially feels like a tribute to blues music; however, roughly halfway through, the narrative shifts unexpectedly into a vampire horror story. It’s a blend of vampire elements and racial themes, reminding me of Get Out (2017). This genre—which Get Out essentially pioneered—combines horror with satirical commentary on racism. I found it very entertaining. My interpretation of the film suggests that it's commenting on racism in America, but also explores the music industry and how those who hold capital are attempting to manipulate artistic expression to maintain power within a predominantly white male sphere or among their selected few. The movie depicts these individuals as predatory figures seeking to exploit the world of music.
