It's really rewarding when you notice a filmmaker making noticeable progress in their career, and that's exactly what writer-director Ryan Coogler has achieved with his newest film, which demonstrates a considerable increase in the depth, artistry, and complexity of his work. Following up on his previous successes like “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (2022), “Creed” (2015) and “Fruitvale Station” (2013), Coogler has delivered an impressive period piece that blends horror elements, telling the story of identical twin brothers (both portrayed by Michael B. Jordan) who return to their Mississippi home in 1932 after years working for Al Capone in Chicago. While there, they amassed a large sum of money with plans to open their own juke joint inside an old sawmill. They’re hoping this venture will bring them even more financial success and help showcase the talent of their gifted cousin, Sammie (Miles Caton), a blues musician who is both a skilled guitarist and vocalist. However, as these three embark on this new project, they face several obstacles, including unresolved issues from their past, the dangers associated with deep-seated social biases, the complicated nature of creative and financial achievement, and, most disturbingly, mysterious forces that may be beyond their control. These elements combine to create a compelling story set during a difficult period in American history, made even more unsettling by the presence of supernatural abilities that seem to offer both promise and the potential for great evil. The filmmaker has created an entertaining and captivating film with strong performances, high-quality production values, well-placed moments of humor, inventive and skillfully handled cinematography, and appropriately subdued (though not excessive) visuals. It’s true that the script could benefit from some refinements—particularly in terms of tighter writing and a more detailed plot—but it does successfully merge elements of different genres like drama, dark comedy, and intelligent horror, while also offering insights into various subjects. This film clearly shows how Coogler has significantly improved his skills as a filmmaker, which is encouraging for what’s to come. It reveals a talent that's more impressive than previously understood or appreciated. “Sinners” is a film worthy of consideration when awards are handed out later this year. Hopefully, it will be recognized.
