Set in 1932 Clarksdale, Mississippi, Sinners unfolds over a single night in October. Sammie Moore, played by Miles Caton in his debut feature role, finds himself at a critical point in his life, pulled between his family’s religious traditions and the vibrant blues nightlife where he can sing, play guitar, and truly feel alive. He seems to be immersing himself in the blues, with little interest in returning to his family's faith. Sammie’s twin cousins, Smoke and Stack (both portrayed by Michael B. Jordan), have recently returned from seven years in Chicago. With a reputation akin to gangsters, they plan to open a new juke joint at an old sawmill previously owned by the Klan. However, their desire for a grand opening that very night leaves them with little time to prepare. As evening arrives and the twins’ club appears poised for a successful launch, an unseen evil waits just outside, ready to be welcomed in. Writer and director Ryan Coogler (known for Black Panther and Creed) drew inspiration from Robert Rodriguez's work, resulting in Sinners – a supernatural action horror film that feels like a darker, blues-infused version of From Dusk Til Dawn. The movie takes its time building toward the horror elements; the first half resembles a well-crafted gangster film, largely driven by dialogue and introducing a cast of characters who are generally entertaining and memorable. Smoke and Stack possess strikingly different personalities and fates within Sinners, which must have presented an interesting challenge for Michael B. Jordan. Smoke is serious and dangerous like a soldier, while Stack is more eccentric and playful in his demeanor; he’s often distinguished by wearing red to contrast with Smoke's blue attire. This allows Jordan to explore both heroic and villainous roles, different musical styles, and the interplay of light and darkness. While categorized as a vampire film, Sinners also deeply explores music. The movie suggests that music has the power to heal communities and attract evil forces. Initially, the conflict between those inside the club and the vampires outside appears as a primarily black versus white confrontation, but it evolves into something far more complex. Consistent with other Ryan Coogler films, Sinners is centered on Black experiences while also incorporating diverse nationalities during an era when whites believed they were the only "decent" race. Chinese individuals own the local grocery store, a biracial girl travels south with Stack from the north, and Remmick (played by Jack O’Connell), the lead vampire, is pursued by Native Americans. These elements enhance appreciation for the film's exceptional score and offer a fresh perspective on vampire lore. The movie combines musical genres, with human characters performing blues while vampires and outsiders embrace Irish folk music and jig dancing. There’s a particularly striking sequence inside Club Juke where Sammie finally gets to showcase his musical talent, featuring a variety of classic and contemporary styles rooted in gutbucket blues. Vampire mythology is reimagined in a satisfying way within Sinners, especially the concept of being invited in. Music serves as a tool for both sides – either to protect the living or to lure them into becoming part of a bloodthirsty pack of undead. Traditional vampire defenses like garlic and wooden stakes are also present. Unlike some vampire films where killing the head vampire can cure those who have been transformed, Sinners establishes that each vampire must be destroyed individually, regardless of whether their leader is defeated. Hoodoo practices also play a significant role; Wunmi Mosaku (from His House and Deadpool & Wolverine) portrays Annie, who has an emotional connection to Smoke and uses her hoodoo abilities to provide guidance as the body count rises. Sinners stands out as one of the most overtly sexual films released so far this year, a departure from recent trends that have shied away from nudity and explicit depictions of intimacy. The characters are filled with lust, which is openly discussed in graphic detail alongside acts of copulation. Sinners delivers a scary, funny, and explicitly sensual bloodbath accompanied by an outstanding blues-inspired score. It’s an instant horror classic, masterful and exceptional, that deserves to be experienced on the largest screen possible.
