Sink the Bismarck! comes from Lewis Gilbert, with a screenplay by Edmund North based on C.S. Forester’s book. Kenneth More, Dana Wynter, Carl Möhner, Laurence Naismith, Geoffrey Keen, Karel Stepanek, Michael Hordern and Maurice Denham are among the cast. Clifton Parker handled the music, and Christopher Challis was in charge of CinemaScope photography. The film takes place during World War II in the North Atlantic, where the British Navy is working to destroy Germany’s most important battleship: The Bismarck. It's a really good war movie that combines smart thinking with action. Primarily, the story focuses on the officers at headquarters (Moore delivers an excellent performance), and their efforts to formulate a strategy for capturing and sinking The Bismarck. There's constant second-guessing of its location, attempts to manage the emotional impact as news arrives about casualties and missing personnel, and some personal conflicts that add to the tense atmosphere. All of this creates a gripping and thoughtful setting for what happens at sea. It’s interesting to note that while Winston Churchill was insisting it didn't matter how they did it, as long as The Bismarck was destroyed, Hitler was sending birthday messages and kind words to his naval leaders. The battle sequences are excellent—a blend of actual footage, impressive model work, and strong effects, all captured with striking clarity by Christopher Challis. Prepare yourself for a truly wonderful World War II film. It earns an 8/10.
