Okay…so here’s another horror movie review from the girl who hasn't yet been frightened by scenes in darkness, bloody killings and sudden noises. My husband, HeBlogger, and I went to the mall last Sunday to see a different film. We thought Tiktik, which is a Filipino horror movie, was already playing. Apparently, it’s not scheduled until next week. Then we saw Sinister's poster, which mentioned, “from the producer of Paranormal and Insidious”. We had both seen those movies and while I didn’t care for Paranormal, we both liked Insidious. So we decided, okay…let’s watch this instead. I knew nothing about this movie, so as we walked into the mostly empty theater, I wondered what it would be like. Would it be a low-budget film about ghosts with three different endings? Oh please...I really hoped not! I crossed my fingers because I noticed there were rolls of super 8 films on the poster. Or would it be about demons taking souls and possessing bodies with a depressing ending? Or maybe something completely different? I was hoping for that last possibility. We were the first two out of five people to watch this movie. The others were three teenage girls, who surprisingly didn’t scream or shout at all during the screening. It was wonderful watching it in silence and peace! Okay, let's get to the review… The movie starts with a scene that looks like a home video, so I thought, uh-oh… But don’t be discouraged. It isn’t anything like Paranormal, and later on in the story you’ll see it is more similar to Insidious. That much I can tell you. The story centers around a true crime writer, played by Ethan Hawke (the only actor I recognized), who moved his family to a house where a family was hanged in the backyard tree and their little girl is still missing. While he's researching, and with the help of rolls of seemingly harmless and happy home videos that mysteriously appeared in the attic, he discovers more brutal murders of different families in different houses. So you’re left wondering… Are these killings connected somehow, considering there’s always a child who disappears? I have to say I thought the story's concept was original. At least, it was for me. So I give it 4.5 gems for Story and Originality...
