I’ve noticed that horror movies continuing a story often don’t live up to expectations. My thinking was that since the initial movie wasn't particularly good, I wouldn’t be overly let down if this one turned out poorly. However, my assessment proved inaccurate; in comparison, the first film now seems exceptional and it became clear how well it succeeded at what it set out to do. There were moments when 'Sinister 2' managed to elicit some fear. It has to be said that the volume of the sound system during the screening certainly amplified the startling scenes. The disturbing portrayals of killings, which were unsettling in the first film, felt excessively exaggerated here. The writing was truly awful. The central plot felt tired and obvious, and I found it difficult to connect with any of the characters; they seemed distant and unfeeling. Acting across the board wasn't good, especially the portrayals of the ghostly children, which resembled a poorly staged school play. I’m not entirely shocked by my reaction to this film, but unfortunately, I suspect we will continue to see more sequels like it being produced. ★½
