This romantic comedy unfolds against the backdrop of the early 90s grunge movement. It follows several twenty-something couples as they navigate relationships and life during the rise of the grunge scene in Seattle. Matt Dillon’s character is connected to the music world, serving as the vocalist for a band called Citizen Dick. The two couples are portrayed by Campbell Scott and Kyra Sedgwick, alongside Bridget Fonda and Dillon, with supporting roles from Sheila Kelley and Bill Pullman. "Singles" was released in September 1992, but filming took place between March and May of 1991—six months prior to the widespread popularity of grunge music thanks to Nirvana’s album *NEVERMIND*. Cameron Crowe initially drafted the script back in 1984, envisioning a Phoenix setting. However, he revised it six years later, drawing inspiration from the Seattle grunge community's unity following the death of Mother Love Bone's singer in March 1990. The movie shares some similarities with "Rock Star" from 2001; however, I think the latter is superior because it centers more on the music itself than on romantic connections. Plus, “Rock Star” features metal music, which I personally prefer, although Alice In Chains’ live performance in this film certainly has a metallic edge. The title "Singles" immediately signals that it's a romcom centered around dating. If you enjoy movies about relationships, you will likely find something to appreciate in "Singles," even if grunge music isn’t your thing. The soundtrack boasts tracks from notable grunge bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Alice In Chains, Mother Love Bone, Jane's Addiction, Smashing Pumpkins and Screaming Trees, among others. Several grunge musicians also make brief appearances, including Chris Cornell, Layne Staley, Eddie Vedder, and Kim Thayil. The film’s runtime is 1 hour and 39 minutes, and it was filmed on location in Seattle. GRADE: B-
