A designer preparing for her wedding (played by Bridget Fonda) finds herself alone in a New York apartment after breaking up with her boyfriend, so she places an ad seeking a roommate. She then takes in a woman who happens to be a twin and is grieving the loss of her sister (Jennifer Jason Leigh). They form a close bond, but strange occurrences begin to unfold. "Single White Female," released in 1992, combines aspects of “Fatal Attraction” from 1987 with the atmosphere reminiscent of “Rosemary’s Baby,” which came out in 1968. It doesn't reach the heights of the former film, but it is comparable to the latter and perhaps even better than that one. The movie creates a disturbing mood, helped along by its location, though this quality ultimately becomes a drawback as it limits the story’s scope; “Rosemary’s Baby” faced a similar issue. The frequent nudity of the two lead performers is certainly engaging, but it doesn't compensate for the repetitive feel and unchanging setting. Despite being watchable, I would have rated it higher if not for the final section, which feels drawn out and strangely dull even with the moments of suspense. The film has a running time of 1 hour and 47 minutes and was filmed at the Ansonia Hotel in Manhattan, as well as Raleigh Studios in Hollywood. GRADE: B-
