I feel good again! Singing In The Rain holds the spot as my favorite musical, although I acknowledge that other films come close—The Wizard Of Oz will always be a perfect movie to me, but Singing In The Rain simply has no shortcomings; it's flawless. Don Lockwood is a silent film star whose life feels dull until talking pictures emerge, presenting him with an opportunity for advancement. A meeting with dancer Kathy Selden changes his path, and alongside his friend and colleague Cosmo Brown, their lives intertwine in the hope of finding satisfaction. Where does one even begin? The movie celebrates happiness—in filmmaking, romance, friendships, and integrity—and it’s purely joyful from beginning to end. With impressive dance numbers, Singing In The Rain avoids having characters simply recite lines before randomly breaking into song; instead, each musical number develops the characters and advances the story, keeping everything connected and vital. Make ‘Em Laugh, Good Morning, and of course, Singing In The Rain are just a few examples of the wonderful songs and dance sequences in this film. The latter is now an iconic moment in cinema that really shows how happy the movie is, while the final 'Broadway Ballet' sequence embodies grace and beauty. The performers are all fantastic; Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, & Debbie Reynolds seem to have been born together, and the combined direction from Stanley Donen (along with Kelly) feels effortless. With nods to itself and playful references, Singing In The Rain consistently appears on best-of lists for critics and movie lovers—and it absolutely earns that recognition. It's a 10/10 without question.
