The film utilizes familiar songs and assembles a well-known cast, aiming for success by tapping into the popularity of movies with talking animals and televised talent shows. While it doesn’t reach the depth of Inside Out or deliver the clear lessons found in Zootopia, similar to Trolls, it offers uncomplicated entertainment, featuring memorable pop tunes and humor that should appeal to children. (However, unlike Trolls, its positive messages aren't as consistently reinforced—more on this later.) The musical performances are undoubtedly the highlight, including Jennifer Hudson’s version of "Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight," a playful duet of “Shake It Off” sung by Witherspoon and Nick Kroll voicing a German boar named Gunter, and Kelly’s impressive rendition of "Hallelujah." The music is truly what justifies seeing Sing, because the plot and underlying ideas have some flaws that prevent it from being exceptional. For example, the portrayal of Rosita's family situation feels off. She shoulders all the responsibility for her 25 piglets, while her husband (Nick Offerman) seems distant and oblivious. He’s so disconnected that he doesn't even notice when she builds an elaborate device to manage the household because she needs a sitter to compete in the contest. Then there’s Johnny, who is yearning for his father’s recognition. A child wanting their parent's approval is relatable, but was it necessary to make the father a bank robber? If you are looking for lighthearted entertainment that will have you humming along afterward, Sing delivers. Just don't overthink it.
