Lawrence Kasdan (who also worked on Raiders of the Lost Ark and Wyatt Earp) wrote and directed Silverado, a film that attempts to recapture the feel of classic westerns—something I initially believed was an obscure title from the 1970s when I added it to my list. However, it turned out to be a movie made during the transition between the mid-80s and the 90s, which gave me some initial reservations that ultimately proved unfounded. While Kasdan's filmography isn’t filled with many major successes beyond Raiders of the Lost Ark, the screenplay is straightforward but avoids the simplistic nature often found in westerns from the 50s and 60s, presenting a more intense depiction of violence and bloodshed. The story follows four cowboys—two brothers portrayed by Kevin Kline and Kevin Costner—who come together for their own individual purposes. Danny Glover plays a Black man seeking revenge (and whose actions help establish the timeline as being around the 1870s-80s), and Scott Glenn embodies a solitary figure who rescues one of the cowboys, leading to further interactions with the others. Their paths converge toward Silverado, where an old "friend" of Scott’s serves as the town's cruel and oppressive sheriff—a standout role for Brian Dennehy, alongside Linda Hunt's performance as the saloon owner. Hunt is a remarkable actress, known for her short stature (just 1.45cm), whose voice and presence are likely familiar to many viewers. The film features action sequences and character relationships, along with a level of violence that distinguishes it from older westerns. I rated Silverado a 7.5 out of 10, or a B+. If you enjoy westerns, it's definitely worth watching—its inclusion in the Criterion Collection suggests its value.
